Estonia Ready to Deploy Troops to Ukraine as Part of “Coalition of the Willing”

Estonia is prepared to contribute a company-sized unit to international peace-support efforts in Ukraine as part of the Western-led “Coalition of the Willing”, Estonian Prime Minister Kristjan Michal announced on April 30.
According to Prime Minister Michal, Estonia stands ready to join the coalition’s deterrence force, currently being developed under the leadership of the United Kingdom and France. The initiative is intended to provide Ukraine with credible security guarantees amid ongoing Russian aggression.
“Ukraine’s security is Europe’s security,” said Michal. “An independent, sovereign Ukraine belonging to the European family is the best strategic guarantee against Moscow’s imperialism for all of us. We must show that we can put good ideas into action.”
Also, Kristjan Michal stated that planning within the “Coalition of the Willing” is ongoing, but once the structure of the deterrence force is finalized, Estonia is prepared to contribute a company-sized combat unit, including military instructors and staff officers.
“We will, of course, ask for a mandate from the Riigikogu before dispatching the unit,” he added.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Estonia continues to view NATO membership as the most reliable long-term solution for Ukraine’s security.
“If NATO membership takes time, Ukraine must be guaranteed deterrence and protection measures with allied troops stationed in the country,” Michal noted.
Earlier, Defense Minister Bill Blair said that Canada was ready to deploy troops as part of a “Coalition of the Willing” in support of Ukraine
