The European Union scored a fresh victory in its sanctions campaign against Russia on September 10, as the European Court of Justice (ECJ) rejected appeals from former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych and Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich to be removed from the EU sanctions list, Radio Svoboda journalist Rikard Jozwiak reported.

The ruling comes just days before the EU is expected to extend restrictive measures against some 2,600 Russian individuals and entities on Friday, according to Jozwiak.

He added that Hungary and Slovakia have been pushing for high-profile oligarchs, including Mikhail Fridman and Alisher Usmanov, to be de-listed.

Journalist notes that the ECJ decision “should” weaken such efforts, reinforcing the legal basis for maintaining sanctions on Kremlin-linked figures.

The EU introduced sweeping sanctions against Russia and its associates following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. These measures target oligarchs, political allies of Vladimir Putin, and businesses supporting Moscow’s war machine.

At the same time, a new investigation highlights the scale of the challenge in enforcing these restrictions. According to a report published by the Ukrainian investigative project Skhemy  on September 4, a Russian state-linked institute connected to chemical weapons production has continued sourcing critical components for banned munitions despite sweeping international sanctions.

Earlier, the UK government imposed new sanctions on eight individuals and three organizations connected to Russia for their role in the forced deportation, indoctrination, and militarization of Ukrainian children.
