EU to Sanction Iran Over Ballistic Missile Supply to Russia for Use in Ukraine
On October 14, Ministers of Foreign Affairs from EU countries agreed to impose sanctions on Iran for supplying ballistic missiles to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine.
The German agency DPA reported this, citing EU diplomats.
The agreed-upon measures will target companies, institutions, and individuals involved in the production and supply of these weapons, as stated by EU diplomats following the decision made by foreign ministers in Luxembourg.
Details of the sanctions are unclear, but a list of those affected will soon be published in the Official Journal of the EU. Earlier reports indicated that sanctions would also be imposed on the state airline Iran Air.
The European Union has previously warned Iran multiple times against transferring ballistic missiles to Russia, viewing such actions as a serious violation.
Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, criticized the proposed EU sanctions, denying that Iran has not provided ballistic missiles to Russia.
On October 4, Bloomberg reported that the EU is preparing a sanctions package against Iran for its missile supplies to Russia, which the US officially confirmed on September 10. Representatives from the United Kingdom, Germany, and France have already announced their efforts to impose sanctions against the company.
According to US officials, the delivered Fath 360 missiles, which have an estimated range of about 120 kilometers, will enable Russia to reserve its longer-range missiles for other operations.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully struck the military arsenal “Kotluban,” located in Russia’s Volgograd region, where, according to the information available to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, an echelon with Iranian missiles had arrived the day before.
