The European Commission has expanded its plan for a “drone wall” along the European Union’s eastern frontier into a broader “European Drone Defence Initiative,” aimed at protecting the entire continent from unmanned aerial threats, Reuters reported on October 14, citing two EU officials and a diplomat.

The revised proposal is expected to form part of a new “defense readiness roadmap,” which the European Commission—the EU’s executive branch—will present on October 16, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Originally conceived as a joint border surveillance project by several eastern EU member states, the initiative will now seek to coordinate detection and interception technologies across Europe’s airspace.

The move follows growing concerns about drone incursions and attacks linked to the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, Reuters wrote.

While details of the plan remain under discussion, EU officials have indicated that it will focus on joint procurement of anti-drone systems, enhanced intelligence-sharing, and the development of a common operational framework for drone defense.

Earlier, it was reported that the EU Parliament backs giving member states authority to shoot down drones or jets entering European airspace under certain rules.
