Even Hamas Talks—But Not Putin: Zelenskyy Says Kremlin Still Rejects Every Peace Effort

During his evening address on October 8, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy drew a stark comparison between international efforts toward peace and Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine.
“Even Hamas is showing readiness for talks with Israel on Gaza,” Zelenskyy said. “But the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin still refuses to begin any dialogue about ending the war against Ukraine.”
The President emphasized that Ukraine’s growing long-range strike capabilities bring the country closer to peace.
“The more effective Ukraine is in long-range capabilities, the faster we can achieve peace,” Zelenskyy noted.

He underlined that, unlike Russia, Ukraine’s goal remains clear and peaceful:
“We know what we want to achieve—peace. We do not wage war for the sake of war, as Russia does. Even Hamas shows negotiability, but not Putin. Not yet.”
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine and its partners are working to create conditions that will compel Russia to pursue peace:
“We are supporting all global diplomatic efforts for peace in the Middle East and very much count on the fact that just pressure on Russia will lead to peace—both for Ukraine and for our entire region. It’s important that US leadership continues to play its role,” the President added.
Earlier, it was reported that Russian leader Vladimir Putin defended the decision to launch the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, calling it “right and timely,” and asserted that Russian forces “fully hold the strategic initiative,” while claiming almost 4,900 square kilometers and 212 settlements were “liberated” in 2025.
