“Every Ukrainian Must Know How to Apply a Tourniquet”: Universities Teach Basic Military Skills

Universities across Ukraine have begun partnering with regional defense centers to train students in basic military skills, even before new legislation makes such programs mandatory, Kyiv Regional Center for National Resistance reported on October 17.
Since September 2025, higher education institutions have introduced Basic Military Training (BMT), which includes theoretical lessons in the fall and practical exercises in the spring.
While parliament is still reviewing a bill to replace BMT with a new course titled “Fundamentals of National Resistance,” Kyiv’s regional defense training center has already launched cooperation with five universities.
“We’re not waiting for the law to pass. Every Ukrainian must know how to apply a tourniquet, handle a weapon, and build fortifications,” said Anastasiia Rymar, founder of the Kyiv Regional Center for National Resistance Training.
She added that separating civilian and military training is crucial during wartime, as military centers are already overstretched.
According to Education Minister Mykola Trofymenko, the official transition to the “Fundamentals of National Resistance” program could take place no earlier than the 2026–2027 academic year, pending parliamentary approval.
Previously, it was reported that the 12th Szczecin Mechanized Brigade organized a special training session, called Brave Tiger (pl. Dzielny Tygrys), at the Drawsko training ground in Poland to familiarize civilian doctors—recently sworn in as military reservists—with the realities of battlefield medicine, inspired by Ukraine’s experience.
