Ukraine has opened its first mosque dedicated to Muslim military personnel, named “As-Salam,” on the initiative of the Defence Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence, UNN reported on March 27.

The mosque was established to serve Muslim soldiers fighting in the ranks of Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence.

The opening ceremony began with the reading of the Quran and a collective prayer, in accordance with Islamic tradition. Muslim servicemen and the head of Defence Intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, attended the event.

Budanov expressed gratitude to Muslim soldiers for their role in combat and presented the mosque with collections of prayers and Islamic remembrances arranged by the agency’s Military Chaplaincy Service.

“Friday prayers and gatherings for Muslims are planned here on a regular basis, where they will be able to learn to read the Quran and increase their spiritual faith,” said Muslim chaplain Suleiman Khairullayev. The mosque is equipped with Qurans in both Arabic and Ukrainian.

Earlier, during Ramadan, a gathering was held at the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Crimea. Initiated by President Zelenskyy in 2023, the event has since become an official annual tradition.
