Former Speaker of Ukraine’s parliament Andrii Parubii was killed in Lviv on Saturday, August 30, in what authorities described as a targeted shooting. Police said the attack occurred shortly after midday in the city’s Frankivsk district. Officers arriving on the scene found Parubiy dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the killing, saying he had been briefed by Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko on “the first known circumstances of this horrific murder.” He stressed that law enforcement agencies, including the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine, were fully engaged in the investigation.

According to local media reports, the gunman was disguised as a delivery courier, allowing him to approach the victim. Journalists from RBC-Ukraine reported that at least seven shell casings were recovered from the scene.

Parubii, born in Lviv in 1971, was a long-standing political figure. A co-founder of the youth wing of the People’s Movement of Ukraine, he later became one of the organizers of the Maidan Self-Defense during the 2013–2014 Revolution of Dignity.

He briefly served as Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council in 2014 before becoming First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, and from 2016 to 2019 he held the position of Speaker.

Throughout his career he was known as a staunch supporter of Ukraine’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration and a consistent opponent of Russian aggression.

Earlier, it was reported that Russian military intelligence (GRU) planned an assassination attempt on the head of Ukraine’s Security Service, Vasyl Malyuk, alongside previously thwarted plots against Zelenskyy and the Chief of Defense Intelligence.
