According to Romania’s Ministry of Defense, fragments of a Russian-made drone carrying an active warhead were found near the border with Moldova on March 1. Authorities have decided to conduct a controlled detonation to eliminate any potential risk to the local population.

The debris was located in an uninhabited area approximately 500 meters from the Moldovan border, with no infrastructure nearby, the ministry stated. A team of specialists from Romania’s Ministry of National Defense, Intelligence Service, and Ministry of Internal Affairs has been deployed to the site in Galați County near the Giurgiulești border crossing.

Investigators confirmed that the wreckage belonged to a Russian-manufactured unmanned aerial vehicle. Analysis identified an active explosive component on board, leading to the decision for an on-site controlled detonation.

Earlier, the Romanian Senate approved two bills granting the military authority to shoot down unauthorized drones violating national airspace and regulating military operations during peacetime. The legislation, passed on February 26, aims to enhance Romania’s defense capabilities and cooperation with NATO partners.
