French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu has stated that a well-armed Ukraine will be a crucial element in Europe’s future security architecture. His remarks were reported by The Guardian on March 11.

Speaking at the Paris Defense and Strategy Forum on March 11, Lecornu emphasized that Europe must dismiss any calls for Ukraine’s demilitarization. He reaffirmed France’s stance, stating that the country “will not support any demilitarization of the Ukrainian army.”

The forum, which brings together over 30 military leaders, is focused on discussing Europe’s and the West’s role in supporting Ukraine within the framework of a potential peace settlement with Russia. Lecornu highlighted that Europe is undergoing a “new period” in its history, distinct from both the Cold War and the so-called “peace dividend era,” as multiple global powers compete for influence.

Addressing the geopolitical landscape, Lecornu pointed to the changing administration in the United States and underlined the need to evaluate NATO’s and the West’s ability to safeguard Europe’s eastern flank. He specifically noted that discussions would cover the impact of potential reductions in contributions from certain countries.

Regarding Ukraine, Lecornu underscored the necessity of careful planning for any potential ceasefire, given Russia’s history of failing to uphold similar agreements.

Lecornu reiterated France’s firm position against Ukraine’s demilitarization, emphasizing that a strong Ukrainian military is essential for long-term regional security.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need for Europe to strengthen its defense capabilities independently, stating that its future “should not be decided in Washington or Moscow.” Speaking ahead of a key European meeting, he highlighted the shifting security landscape and called for increased defense investments, including in nuclear deterrence, without raising taxes.
