Ukraine’s natural gas production in October reached its highest level since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the exploration and production consulting company ExPro reported on its website on November 6.

In October 2024, gross natural gas production volumes rose by 2.3% compared to the previous year, reaching 1.663 billion cubic meters, according to ExPro calculations. This marks the highest monthly production level since January 2022, prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion. The average daily gross natural gas production in October 2024 was 53.6 million cubic meters, 1.3% higher than in September 2024, and the highest daily average since February 2022.

In the first 10 months of 2024, Ukraine produced nearly 15.85 billion cubic meters of natural gas, marking a 2% increase compared to 2023 and a 2.7% increase compared to 2022.

According to ExPro’s forecast, Ukraine’s gross natural gas production in 2024 could increase by 2.2%, or 420 million cubic meters, reaching a total of 19.1 billion cubic meters.

Previously heavily reliant on Russian gas, Ukraine successfully transitioned to alternative suppliers over the past decade and expanded its domestic production.

After Russia launched its full-scale assault on Ukraine in early 2022, Europe faced an immediate challenge due to its heavy dependence on Russian gas. Europe quickly adapted. By 2023, Russian pipeline gas accounted for only 8 percent of the EU’s energy imports, a significant drop from over 40 percent in 2021, according to a recent publication by Politico.
