Ukraine Strikes Deep Into Russia, Hitting Airfield, Major Oil Refinery and Air Defenses

Ukrainian forces struck the Rostov-on-Don airfield, the Ryazan Oil Refinery, and three Russian air defense assets during an overnight operation in Russia on September 6, with fires reported at both the airfield and refinery.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on September 6, Ukrainian forces targeted the Ryazan Oil Refinery in Russia’s Ryazan region. A fire was recorded at the facility, which the General Staff said is involved in supplying the Russian armed forces.

The Ryazan refinery is one of Russia’s largest oil-processing facilities, with a design capacity of around 17 million metric tons of crude per year. It produces gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation kerosene, and other petroleum products.

Fire Point, a Ukrainian defense manufacturer, said its FP-1 drones struck equipment at two major primary crude-processing units at the refinery.

The company reported hits on the distillation columns of the ELOU-AVT-6 unit, the refinery’s largest primary processing unit with an annual capacity of 8.5 million metric tons, as well as equipment at the AVT-3 unit, which has a capacity of 3.1 million tons per year.

Together, the two units account for more than 77% of the refinery’s primary oil-processing capacity, according to Fire Point.

Separately, Ukrainian forces struck the Rostov-on-Don airfield in Russia’s Rostov region. The General Staff reported a fire in the area of the facility but said the extent of the damage was still being assessed.

Three Russian air defense assets were also hit in the Rostov region—a Podlet radar station and two Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery systems.

The Podlet radar is designed to detect low-altitude and small aerial targets, including drones and cruise missiles. The Pantsir-S1 is a short-range air defense system combining surface-to-air missiles with 30 mm automatic cannons to engage aircraft, helicopters, drones, and precision-guided weapons.

The strikes were part of a broader overnight Ukrainian drone operation that targeted at least 14 Russian regions, as well as temporarily occupied Crimea and areas over the Black and Azov seas. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed 258 Ukrainian drones were intercepted, while Moscow and the surrounding region were left untouched under a temporary airspace arrangement during US envoy visits.
