Ukraine Targets 14 Russian Regions in Overnight Drone Attack, Moscow Left Untouched

Ukrainian drones targeted at least 14 regions of Russia, as well as temporarily occupied Crimea and areas over the Black and Azov seas, during a large-scale overnight operation on September 6.

Moscow and the surrounding region were left untouched in line with a temporary airspace arrangement during US envoy visits.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry on September 6, drones were intercepted over the Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Oryol, Rostov, Ryazan, Saratov, Tambov, and Tula regions, as well as Krasnodar region.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 258 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight. The ministry did not disclose the total number of drones it said were involved in the attack. Ukraine has not independently confirmed the Russian figures.

Drone activity was also reported over temporarily occupied Crimea and the Black and Azov seas.

The operation coincided with a temporary Ukrainian commitment concerning Russian airspace during planned visits by US President Donald Trump’s representatives to Moscow and Kyiv.

On September 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would ensure the normal functioning of Russian airspace over the weekend so that the US representatives could travel safely.

The Kremlin subsequently said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had ordered Russian forces not to strike Kyiv for three days. Air raid alerts, however, continued in the Ukrainian capital during this period.
