German FM Wadephul Warns Russia Could Use Ukraine Ceasefire to Prepare NATO Attack

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul warned that Europe should not lower its guard even if efforts to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine succeed, saying Russia could use a truce to prepare for a future attack on NATO, according to Deutsche Welle on December 23. 

Wadephul said Europe’s security dependeds on deterring Russia and sustaining support for Ukraine, adding that Berlin saw no basis for scaling back defense efforts.

He declined to assess the likelihood of such a scenario, but urged allies not to ignore the risk and said Europe should deal with the Kremlin “from a position of strength,” DW added.

At the same time, he argued that “Europe’s security is only possible as security from Russia.”

Wadephul added that Europe should remain vigilant even if active fighting stops, saying: “I can only advise being prepared for such a development.” 

Meanwhile, it was reported that Wadephul condemned Russia’s strikes and drone incursions into Poland, rejected Moscow’s explanation, and said allies would respond with stronger measures, including tougher sanctions.
