Germany and Poland Joint Action Plan Includes NATO Strengthening and Ukraine Support
Germany and Poland have agreed to collaborate on enhancing defense cooperation to address regional security concerns, including strengthening NATO's presence on the eastern flank and coordinating assistance to Ukraine.
This joint action plan was unveiled by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday, July 2, in Warsaw.
The Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz is on a visit to Warsaw, during which he is meeting the Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk, and participating in intergovernmental consultations between the governments of the two countries, the first such meeting since 2018.
“We will strive for ensuring transatlantic political unity, as well as optimal military presence of the North American Allies in Europe, including in the Eastern flank,” stated the German-Polish action plan.
Both countries also announced plans to deepen intergovernmental cooperation to provide military support to Ukraine, focusing on the repair and maintenance of German Leopard 2 tanks.
“Germany and Poland will also strive to optimize repair and maintenance of Leopard 2 tanks in the context of Ukrainian needs resulting from Russia’s illegal war of aggression,” the plan stated.
Poland is also considering becoming a participant in the European Sky Shield Initiative coordinated by Germany. The project aims to build and develop a ground-based integrated European air defense system.
Additionally, according to the Wall Street Journal report on July 1, NATO intends to create a senior representative role in Kyiv and establish a new command in Germany aimed at coordinating assistance for Ukraine in anticipation of a potential return of Donald Trump to the White House, who has frequently criticized NATO and aid to Ukraine.
