Germany Compiles Bunker List Amid Rising Russia Threat
Germany has announced plans to compile a comprehensive list of bunkers and other emergency shelters as concerns grow over potential security threats from Russia.
According to the German Interior Ministry, the initiative includes identifying underground train stations, car parks, state-owned buildings, and private properties that could provide protection for civilians in emergencies.
A spokesperson for the ministry confirmed that a digital directory will be developed to allow citizens to locate shelters via a mobile application. In addition, individuals will be encouraged to convert basements and garages into protective spaces.
The project, described as extensive, will involve the Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, along with other relevant authorities.
Currently, Germany has 579 bunkers, most of which date back to the Second World War and the Cold War era, with a capacity to shelter approximately 480,000 people. This represents a significant reduction from the country’s previous capacity when around 2,000 bunkers were operational. The initiative follows a June conference of senior officials, during which the key elements of the plan were agreed upon.
Earlier, General Christian Freuding, Head of Germany’s Special Task Force on Ukraine, warned that Russia aims to rebuild its military capabilities by 2029, potentially preparing for renewed aggression, including against NATO member states. Speaking in Kyiv, he emphasized the growing awareness of this threat within Germany and its eastern neighbors.
