In an effort to make training more realistic, Germany has provided Soviet-era tanks borrowed from museums to Ukrainian forces, according to Lieutenant General Andreas Marlow, commander of the EU Military Assistance Mission for Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine).

This mission, launched in response to Ukraine’s call for support, aims to provide comprehensive military training, including specialized skills and combat readiness.

Since its initiation in October 2022, EUMAM Ukraine has trained approximately 63,000 Ukrainian soldiers. In Germany, instructors from 17 nations have prepared around 18,000 Ukrainian troops, covering various disciplines such as operating advanced tanks, air defense systems, sniping, engineering, medical assistance, and counter-drone tactics.

To simulate battlefield conditions, German instructors constructed trench systems modeled on Russian designs and introduced Soviet tanks, which represent the opposing side in these exercises. While Marlow did not disclose the exact number or origin of the tanks, he confirmed their use as part of the effort to replicate realistic combat scenarios.

The training exercises include additional measures to enhance battlefield awareness. In abandoned equipment, small “traps” are set up to teach soldiers areas where heightened caution is necessary.

This EU-backed mission, with training primarily conducted in Germany and Poland, continues to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Future plans include training another 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers in the coming months.
