EU Extends Training Mission for Ukrainian Troops by Two Years
The European Union has announced a two-year extension of its military training mission for Ukrainian soldiers, further supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
This decision, confirmed by EU foreign ministers, enables the continuation of structured training under the European Union Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM) across 24 member states.
According to Rikard Jozwiak, a Europe-focused journalist for Radio Free Europe, the EU mission, active since October 2022, has provided combat and operational training to over 70,000 Ukrainian troops. The initial mission, launched with a €3.1 billion budget, was designed to support Ukraine in enhancing its defense readiness and operational skills.
The mission’s extension was addressed by Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Borrell emphasized the importance of maintaining and expanding EU support as Ukraine’s armed forces continue to face significant challenges on the frontline.
“We are committed to enhancing the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ capabilities and strengthening our training mission,” Borrell noted, adding that he hopes for unified support from EU member states.
The EUMAM initiative, active since October 2022, provides Ukrainian forces with combat and operational training across several EU countries. Funded with an initial €3.1 billion budget, the mission aims to enhance the operational readiness and defense skills of Ukrainian troops.
