Poland Details Training Plan for Ukrainian Legion Amid Bilateral Security Pact

Authors

In recent statements, Deputy Minister of Defense of Poland, Paweł Zalewski, clarified Poland’s role in the training of the so-called Ukrainian Legion on Polish soil. According to Zalewski, Warsaw is not directly involved in recruiting Ukrainians for this voluntary formation, which will receive training in Poland under a bilateral security agreement. Emphasizing Poland’s legal constraints, Zalewski specified that recruitment will be managed through Ukrainian consular offices without additional obligations for Poland.

He outlined that after basic training provided by the Polish military, volunteers will be transferred to Ukrainian jurisdiction to fulfill military service duties according to Ukrainian laws and tasks assigned. Zalewski underscored the importance of allowing these soldiers to return to their families after their service. The arrangement also includes a division of responsibilities regarding equipment between the Polish and Ukrainian sides.

The security agreement with Poland not only covers the formation of the Ukrainian Legion but also includes provisions for countering Russian missiles and drones targeting Polish territory.
