Germany is expanding its military support for Ukraine with a major investment in long-range strike capabilities — including combat drones and missiles.

According to Welt on June 2, German officials have signed their first contract to fund the production of long-range weapons for Ukraine. The deal includes more than 500 AN-196 strike drones, each capable of flying up to 1,200 kilometers and carrying a 50-kilogram explosive payload.

The drones, financed directly by Germany, are expected to be delivered in the coming months and will strengthen Ukraine’s ability to target key enemy positions far beyond the front line.

“We can confirm that Germany is financing the production of long-range weapons in Ukraine,” the German Ministry of Defense stated. “This will ensure fast delivery of weapon systems that Ukrainian forces are already trained to operate.”

The ministry declined to disclose further details, citing security concerns. Revealing specifics, they said, could expose the operational capabilities of Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the question of supplying Taurus long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine is still being considered. However, he underscored that Germany will not allow itself to be drawn into the war.
