New German Foreign Minister Wadephul Pledges Stronger EU Support for Ukraine

In his first foreign visit as Germany’s new Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul pledged European support for Ukraine during a meeting with Polish officials in Warsaw on May 7.
Wadephul, who took office on May 6 alongside newly sworn-in Chancellor Friedrich Merz and a new cabinet, emphasized that Germany and Europe would maintain their backing of Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.
At the Polish Army Museum, Wadephul and Polish officials discussed European security and the collective response to Russia’s aggression. “Together, we are now doing more for European security, including with financial resources,” Wadephul said during the meeting.
He also issued a stark warning to the Kremlin, affirming that Germany and its European allies would continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian forces. “Everyone in Moscow must know that they have to reckon with us. Europe will support Ukraine,” Wadephul added.
Wadephul’s comments align with those of Chancellor Merz, who has previously indicated his readiness to increase Germany’s support for Ukraine.
This includes the potential delivery of long-range Taurus missiles to Kyiv, a commitment that his predecessor, former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, had blocked due to concerns about escalating tensions with Russia.
In related news, Germany announced a new military aid package to Ukraine on May 6, including advanced air defense missiles for the IRIS-T systems, according to an updated list published on the German government’s website.
