Germany will deploy Patriot air defense systems to Rzeszów, near the Ukrainian border, later this month, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced on January 13 during a visit to Warsaw.

“We are well aware of Rzeszów's crucial role as a logistical hub for aid to Ukraine. I don’t have a detailed schedule for my meetings over the next two weeks, especially given the ongoing election campaign in Germany, but I will personally visit Rzeszów in January to ensure the Patriot defense systems are operational there this month,” Pistorius stated.

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that the final details are being coordinated, according to a Radio Free Europe correspondent.

“Jasionka [Rzeszów Airport] is a key port for supporting Ukraine, both in humanitarian and other aspects. Over 90% of aid passes through Poland, which makes this allied support all the more essential,” said Kosiniak-Kamysz.

In addition to Germany, Norwegian military personnel have been guarding the Rzeszów airport since December 2024. Norway has deployed troops, a NASAMS air defense system, and four F-35 fighter jets to Poland.

Previously, Ukraine has expressed its intention to localize the production of Patriot air defense systems. Speaking to readers of the French newspaper Le Parisien, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine has repeatedly requested licenses from the United States to manufacture the systems domestically.
