Greek authorities have detained a Russian intelligence asset accused of surveilling military shipments destined for Ukraine. The arrest took place in the northeastern port city of Alexandroupoli, a key transit hub for NATO equipment transfers.

According to Ekathimerini, the suspect is a 59-year-old Georgian-born resident of Greece who had lived in the country for several years. He was reportedly recruited in early autumn 2024 by a fellow Georgian national with known links to Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU .

Investigators say the man systematically monitored military installations over a six-month period, documenting the movement of equipment, particularly shipments bound for Ukraine. Data retrieved from his mobile phone indicate he sent images and detailed reports to his handler abroad.

“He claimed he was willing to help the ‘motherland’ for any amount,” a Greek official said.

The alleged recruiter is believed to have a history of cooperation with Russian intelligence and was detained in Lithuania in March.

Earlier, Kyrgyz authorities arrested local officials and journalists suspected of recruiting mercenaries for Russia's war in Ukraine.

Both suspects are known to have connections to Rossotrudnichestvo, a Kremlin-affiliated agency tasked with supporting Russian nationals abroad and promoting Russia’s geopolitical interests internationally.
