US President Donald Trump said he does not believe claims made by Moscow that Ukraine carried out a drone strike on a residence linked to Vladimir Putin. Trump made the remarks speaking to Reuters aboard Air Force One on January 4.

While returning to Washington from Florida, Trump dismissed the narrative put forward by Russian officials, according to Reuters.

“I don’t believe that strike happened,” Trump said. “There is something that happened fairly nearby, but had nothing to do with this.”

Russia had previously claimed that Ukrainian forces attempted to attack a presidential residence, a charge Kyiv has denied and which Western officials and analysts have questioned due to a lack of corroborating evidence.

Trump’s remarks add to growing skepticism in Washington and Europe over Moscow’s version of events, particularly as the alleged incident has been cited by Russian officials as a potential justification for hardening their negotiating stance on the war in Ukraine.

Earlier, US officials reported that the CIA assessed Ukraine did not target a residence used by Russian leader Vladimir Putin in a recent drone strike in northern Russia, directly contradicting a claim made by Putin during a phone call with President Donald Trump.
