ICEYE Radar Satellites Provide Ukraine With Real-Time Battlefield Intelligence

Ukraine’s Defense Forces can track Russian troop movements almost in real time thanks to ICEYE satellites, the company’s founder, Rafał Modrzewski, said in an interview with Polish journalist Patrycjusz Wyżga on August 11.
According to Modrzewski, the technology enables up to 20–24 images of the same target to be taken each day, providing continuous monitoring and allowing rapid detection of battlefield changes.
“In fact, we are observing troop movements practically in real time. Both Ukrainian intelligence and the Ukrainian military use these capabilities—they receive the images, analyze them, and make the necessary decisions,” Modrzewski said.
ICEYE operates the world’s largest commercial constellation of synthetic aperture radar satellites, capable of capturing any point on Earth with a resolution of 25 centimeters, regardless of weather or time of day.
Modrzewski noted that the company had been assisting Ukraine before the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, including detecting troop concentrations and equipment movements from deep inside Russia toward the Ukrainian border.
He also said that in February 2025, the United States temporarily restricted Ukraine’s access to some satellite data, including from Maxar and Starlink.
“We continued to supply data to the Ukrainian side. They were very grateful and emphasized that this is critically important for them,” Modrzewski stated.
The ICEYE head stressed that, unlike some other providers, the company maintains full control over its satellite network, ensuring uninterrupted service even in the event of unexpected political decisions by Ukraine’s partners.
Earlier, Ukrainian forces merged the chassis of a 2S19 Msta-S self-propelled howitzer with the turret of a T-72B tank, producing a hybrid armored vehicle adapted to the demands of modern combat.
