If Russian Delegation Is Just Theater, World Must React Strongly, Zelenskyy Says

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for a strong international response should it become evident that the Russian delegation involved in recent talks is not genuinely committed to negotiations.

Speaking at the European Political Community summit in Albania on May 16, Zelenskyy noted that the delegation sent by Moscow to Istanbul includes the same individuals who participated in talks in 2022, suggesting that Russia's fundamental stance has not changed.

“If it turns out that the Russian delegation really is just a theatrical and can`t deliver any results today, the world must respond. There needs to be a strong reaction, including sanction against Russia`s energy sector and banks,” Zelenskyy said.

He emphasized the need to maintain and increase pressure until tangible progress is achieved.

“Ukraine is ready to take all realistic steps to end this war. And we need a full stop to the killing long enough to give diplomace a real chance,” he added.

Zelenskyy’s comments reflect ongoing concerns about the sincerity of Russia’s approach to the negotiations and the importance of sustained international engagement.

Earlier, direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have begun in Istanbul, marking the first such talks since 2022. Turkish representatives are also present at the meeting.

Although Russian leader Vladimir Putin initially proposed holding the talks in Istanbul, he did not attend in person. The Russian delegation is being led by Vladimir Medinsky.
