Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Visit Ukraine on State Flag Day, August 23
On August 23, 2024, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make an official visit to Ukraine, coinciding with Ukraine’s State Flag Day. This marks the first visit by an Indian head of government to Ukraine in the history of their bilateral relations.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The discussions are expected to cover issues related to bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and several documents between Ukraine and India are anticipated to be signed.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs had earlier confirmed the plan for Modi’s visit to Ukraine but did not specify the exact date. It is also known that Modi plans to visit Poland as part of his trip.
In July 2024, Modi visited Moscow for meetings with Russian Vladimir Putin, where they discussed, among other things, the release of Indian citizens who had been enlisted in the Russian military. This visit drew criticism from Ukrainian officials, as it coincided with a missile strike on a children’s hospital in Kyiv.
On July 19, 2024, the Foreign Ministers of Ukraine and India, Dmytro Kuleba and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, held their first conversation since Modi’s visit to Russia. The ministers discussed further development of bilateral relations. Jaishankar described the conversation as productive, while Kuleba highlighted the ongoing efforts to advance Ukrainian-Indian ties following recent high-level meetings, including President Zelenskyy’s meeting with Modi during the G7 summit.
