Iran has shown interest in constructing a new nuclear power plant in collaboration with Russia's state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, according to CEO Alexei Likhachev, who spoke to Russian state media on January 20.

"During this visit, the Iranian side proposed expanding cooperation... to select another site to build several large-capacity [nuclear] power units," Likhachev said.

Discussions on the project took place during an Iranian presidential visit to Moscow on January 17, coinciding with the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement. This updated deal, replacing a 2001 agreement, includes 47 articles covering various areas of bilateral cooperation, though specific details remain undisclosed.

"It's a good initiative. We need to clarify the technological aspects of the project and, of course, discuss the financial scheme... But we can see from the Iranian side's attitude that they are ready to begin this work immediately," Likhachev added.

He also noted Iran’s interest in expanding small nuclear power plant projects, which would require additional intergovernmental agreements.

The announcement follows Russia's broader efforts to expand its nuclear energy projects globally, with more than 10 power units currently being built abroad. These projects, aimed at extending Moscow's influence, include nuclear plants under construction in Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Iran, and Turkey.

It was previously reported that Iran has been conducting secret diplomatic missions to Russia to enhance its military and defense capabilities, according to The Times report on January 13.
