Iran has received its first Mi-28NE Night Hunter attack helicopter from Russia, marking a key milestone in a 2023 procurement deal amid growing military pressure from the US, Army Recognition Group reported on January 29, citing Russian media sources.

The helicopter, part of Russia’s efforts to strengthen its military ties with Iran, was photographed at a facility in Tehran for inspection, signaling its readiness for operational use in the future.

The Mi-28NE, designed for export, is equipped with advanced features for engaging both ground and aerial targets, including a 30mm cannon, air-to-ground missiles, and unguided rockets. The helicopter’s robust armor and avionics ensure its survivability and effectiveness in combat, including low-altitude operations, day or night.

The system also offers flexibility for various military roles, including air assault, reconnaissance, and suppression of enemy air defense, Army Recognition Group wrote.

This delivery comes at a time when Iranian and Russian military cooperation is intensifying in response to escalating US pressures in the region.

The Mi-28NE’s capabilities are expected to bolster Iran’s defense against potential US military actions.

This move aligns with Iran’s strategy of diversifying its military assets amidst ongoing sanctions and protests all over Iran.

Earlier reports suggest that Iran has provided Russia with missiles and weapons worth close to $3 billion to support Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine.

Recently, an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel, Rona, which Western investigations have previously linked to maritime routes used for Iranian weapons deliveries to Russia, had sunk in the Caspian Sea.
