The issue of Russian gas supplies to Europe is reportedly being discussed as part of broader negotiations between Russia and the United States, according to Kremlin officials, Reuters reported on May 9.

Russia’s gas exports to Europe have declined sharply since the 2022 explosion of the Nord Stream pipeline under the Baltic Sea. Earlier this year, gas flows through Ukraine also stopped after Kyiv declined to extend a transit agreement, citing the ongoing war.

According to eight sources familiar with the talks, officials from Washington and Moscow have discussed possible US involvement in facilitating the return of Russian gas exports to Europe.

A senior Kremlin aide, Yuri Ushakov, confirmed that the topic has been raised in discussions with American counterparts.

“The matter has been brought up with the Americans,” Ushakov said when asked about the possibility of restoring gas supplies.

Sources close to the talks suggested that clarifying Russia’s role in the European Union’s gas market could form part of a broader political settlement with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

While the discussions remain at an early stage, they come as the EU considers tighter restrictions on Russian energy. A proposed plan under review would ban new gas deals with Russia by the end of 2025 and phase out existing imports by the end of 2027.

According to Reuters the plan will be debated next month and would require approval from the European Parliament and a majority of member states. Hungary and Slovakia have already voiced opposition to the proposal.

Previously, it was reported that US Treasury Secretary Bessent called Putin a war criminal, while affirming that diplomacy remains necessary.
