German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on the Russian Federation to agree to a sustained ceasefire in Ukraine and to engage in genuine peace negotiations, warning that failure to do so will result in the imposition of additional sanctions.
The statement was made during a meeting with European Council President António Costa, Stern.de reported on May 9.
Chancellor Merz reaffirmed Germany’s and the European Union’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine in the face of ongoing Russian aggression.
Merz affirmed that Germany will continue to "stand firmly with Ukraine" and "do everything in our power to bring this war to an end as swiftly as possible."
He underscored that any dialogue concerning peace must include the active participation of Ukraine and reiterated the EU’s continued support for strengthening Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.

In a recent phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, Chancellor Merz expressed support for a proposed 30-day ceasefire initiative, which he views as a necessary step toward achieving a lasting and meaningful peace agreement.
“We call upon Russia to now engage in a path towards a lasting peace, and if that does not happen, we will not hesitate to increase the pressure of sanctions with our European partner and the United States,” he stated.
Earlier, Germany’s newly appointed Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has urged all European Union member states to boost defense spending to close capability gaps and strengthen the EU’s ability to sustain support for Ukraine.
