Ukraine is in discussions with Italy regarding Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s proposal to extend NATO’s Article 5 protection to Ukraine without full membership, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi confirmed on March 7.

Tykhyi said Kyiv is working with Italian partners to clarify the specifics of Meloni’s idea, which was presented as a general concept.

“We welcome Meloni’s statement as part of the broader discussion on providing Ukraine with early security guarantees and ensuring peace and stability for our country,” Tykhyi stated.

“We are in contact with our Italian partners to understand the details of this proposal. So far, it has been introduced as a broad idea. We want to grasp exactly what is meant in more specific terms,” he added.

NATO’s Article 5 states that an armed attack against one member of the Alliance is considered an attack against all, triggering collective defense measures.

Ealrier, Meloni emphasized that a just and lasting peace in Ukraine is only possible with adequate security guarantees, which should be implemented within NATO.
