Italian Parliament Approves Extension of Military Assistance to Ukraine

The Italian Parliament has voted in favor of extending military assistance to Ukraine through December 31, 2025. This decision ensures the continuation of weapons deliveries to Kyiv amid ongoing support for Ukraine’s defense efforts.

According to ANSA, the motion was approved by the Lower House on January 28, with 192 votes in favor and 41 against. The measure had already received approval from the Senate.

The vote revealed divisions within the opposition, with three parties backing the extension and two opposing it. Among those in favor were centrist and Democratic parties, while the Five Star Movement (M5S) and the Green-Left Alliance (AVS) voted against the measure.

On January 27, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as one of Ukraine’s greatest allies, highlighting her efforts to counter Russian influence and her support for Ukraine. In an interview with Cecilia Sala for Il Foglio, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Meloni’s assistance and emphasized the importance of ensuring key global leaders understand the realities of Russia’s actions and the situation in Ukraine.

Earlier, on January 16, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto visited Kyiv for strategic talks, as confirmed by the Italian Embassy in Ukraine. While the details of his agenda were not disclosed, the visit underscored Italy’s strong support for Ukraine, with $1.7 billion in military aid planned for 2025.
