Lithuania is ready to contribute ground forces, air defense capabilities, and a naval vessel to a future international mission aimed at maintaining peace in Ukraine, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said, according to LRT on January 12.

Speaking in an interview, Nausėda said Lithuania supports the emerging plans within the coalition of the willing  to deploy forces after a ceasefire, stressing that peace would need to be secured “on land, in the air, and at sea.”

He said Lithuania, despite its size, is prepared to make a tangible contribution, including land units, air defense elements, and a ship, though final details would depend on further military planning.

Nausėda emphasized that Lithuanian troops would not be sent to fight, but to help sustain peace and security once an agreement is reached. He noted that discussions are still at an early stage and that concrete decisions will be shaped by ongoing talks among allied chiefs of staff, according to LRT.

In the same interview, the Lithuanian President underlined that Ukraine has demonstrated a willingness to seek peace and make concessions, adding that responsibility now lies with Russia to respond. He also reaffirmed Lithuania’s firm values-based foreign policy, rejecting any suggestion of reopening Belarusian fertilizer transit in exchange for political or economic concessions.

“Unfortunately, one unknown remains today: Russia’s reaction. I spoke about this in Paris: I have no questions about our mutual agreement—between the US, the EU, and Ukraine—there are no problems here, we see the situation in a similar way,” Nausėda said, cited by LRT.

“But the peace agreement will not be concluded between the US, Europe, and Ukraine, but between Ukraine and Russia. That is why Russia’s reaction is so important,” he stressed,

Lithuania has been among Ukraine’s strongest supporters since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, backing military aid, sanctions against Russia and Belarus, and closer coordination within NATO and the European Union.

Previously, it was reported that Ukraine has emerged as a central pillar of Lithuania’s updated National Security Strategy for 2026, according to an assessment published by Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service.

The draft strategy, prepared by the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence, explicitly states that European security is impossible without an independent, sovereign, and well-protected Ukraine that is fully integrated into the Euro-Atlantic space.
