The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged a strong protest with Russia over its latest large-scale strikes on Ukraine. On September 10, the ministry summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires in Vilnius and handed him an official note of protest.

The Lithuanian MFA emphasized that the recent wave of Russian attacks represents a new stage of escalation. The ministry recalled the overnight assault on September 7, when Russia launched more than 800 drones and 13 missiles against Ukrainian targets, as well as the strike on the settlement of Yarova in Donetsk region, which claimed the lives of 24 civilians.

“With these terrorist actions, Russia demonstrably rejects international efforts to end Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, achieve a ceasefire, and ensure sustainable and lasting peace. It once again demonstrates that all the statements by Russian representatives about openness to negotiations and peace were merely hypocrisy and stalling tactics,” the statement said.

Lithuania also underlined that the latest Russian strikes had direct consequences for NATO’s security. During the attack, drones violated Polish airspace, the ministry noted.

“This attack constitutes a menacing escalation against Lithuania’s strategic partner and NATO ally, and thus poses a threat to the collective security of NATO as a whole,” the MFA stressed.

Vilnius once again demanded that Russia immediately end its war of aggression, withdraw all occupation forces from Ukraine’s internationally recognized territory, and pay full reparations for the destruction and suffering inflicted on the Ukrainian people.

Earlier, Russia claimed it had no intention of striking targets inside Poland but offered no explanation for how several of its drones crossed into Polish territory.
