Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko has signaled that he might not seek another presidential term, stating that his current mandate could be his last, according to RBC-Ukraine on August 8.

Speaking during a visit to the Mahiliou region, Lukashenko told reporters, “I’ve been president for too long, and it’s time for the country to move on. But it’s not up to me alone—it’s up to the people.”

He stressed that he is not considering his son as a possible successor, noting that the next leader should be “a person from within the system who understands the challenges Belarus faces” and capable of “ensuring the country’s independence and stability.”

Lukashenko underlined that the future head of state must be ready to work under pressure from both Russia and the West.

While not naming any candidates, he emphasized the need for a “pragmatic and experienced” figure who would avoid radical changes. “We cannot have experiments with the country,” he said, warning against instability during any political transition.

Lukashenko, in power since 1994, last won re-election in 2020 in a vote widely condemned by the West as fraudulent, sparking mass protests that were violently suppressed.

Earlier, it was reported that Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko called for military mobilization to support the country’s economy amid global instability, emphasizing the importance of non-traditional methods to ensure resilience and adapt to economic pressures.
