French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk are set to visit Moldova next week to take part in celebrations marking the country’s Independence Day.

The French presidency announced the visit on August 22, as reported by The Guardian. According to the statement, the leaders’ joint trip aims to underscore the European Union’s solidarity with Moldova at a crucial moment, as the country approaches national elections.

“The leaders will reaffirm their full support for Moldova’s security, sovereignty and European path”, — the Élysée Palace announced.

At the same time, Moldova is facing growing pressure from Russia in the information sphere. Moscow is intensifying its disinformation efforts targeting Moldovan communities across Europe ahead of the September elections, Moldova’s National Security Adviser Stanislav Secrieru told Politico on August 4.

“Russia and its proxies are now actively focusing their efforts on the Moldovan diaspora,” Secrieru said, warning of a renewed push by a Kremlin-linked network known as Matryoshka. According to him, officials have documented a sharp rise in propaganda operations aimed at nearly 250,000 Moldovans living abroad.

According to Politico, the campaign reportedly includes the creation of fake media outlets designed to mimic legitimate European platforms, which are then used to disseminate fabricated stories.

Earlier, Moldovan President Maia Sandu warned that Russia is preparing an unprecedented interference campaign ahead of September’s parliamentary elections. She said Moscow is backing several political projects coordinated from a single center and financed through schemes tied to fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor.
