Macron: Putin Does Not Want Peace With Ukraine
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin is not prepared for peace negotiations, Le Figaro reported, citing Macron.
Putin "does not want peace" with Kyiv and "is not ready to negotiate," Macron said on Sunday following a massive Russian attack on Ukraine's energy network.
After this assault, "one of the most intense since the start of the conflict," Macron stated in Buenos Aires, "I believe it is clear that President Putin's intentions are to escalate the fighting."
"If we need to know what Mr. Putin's intentions are, what he has just done on the ground clearly signals them: whatever his statements are, he does not want peace and is not ready to negotiate," he added.
When asked about the initiative of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who had a telephone conversation with Putin on Friday, Macron replied that he was "not here to comment". "I think that every leader is totally free to take the initiative,” he added. He himself has "never ruled out" resuming talks with Putin but he would do so "when the context and conditions are right".
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation on Friday, November 15. Scholz condemned Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and called on Putin to end it and withdraw troops.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Scholz had informed him of plans to call Putin. He, however, expressed concerns, describing the move as a potential "Pandora's box.”
