Majority of Germans Support Sending Arms to Ukraine, Growing Backing for Peacekeeping Role

A majority of Germans support their country's supply of weapons to Ukraine and potential participation in a peacekeeping mission, according to a survey on February 4 for Frontal, a German investigative news program aired on ZDF.
The survey, conducted between January 27 and 29, 2025, included 1,428 eligible voters and was carried out via telephone and online interviews.
The poll found that 40 percent of respondents believe Germany should continue its current level of support for Ukraine, while 27 percent think it should be increased. Meanwhile, another 27 percent said arms deliveries should be reduced.
Support for Ukraine is stronger in West Germany than in the eastern states. In the western regions, 42 percent back maintaining current support levels, and 28 percent favor increasing aid, bringing overall approval to 70 percent.
In the east, which includes the former German Democratic Republic, 33 percent support the current policy, and 20 percent advocate for more weapons, totaling 53 percent approval.
Regarding Germany’s possible participation in a European peacekeeping mission to enforce a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, 59 percent of those surveyed expressed support, while 35 percent opposed the idea.
On February 2, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged member states to increase defense spending, warning that military readiness acts as deterrence, especially amid Russia’s war against Ukraine.
