German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that all signs indicate Vladimir Putin’s expansionist ambitions will not stop with Ukraine, Sky News reported on September 8.
Speaking at Berlin’s Foreign Ministry, Merz urged European allies to reassess their interests and actively pursue new global partnerships amid shifting relations with the US.
“We in Europe must adjust our interests—without false nostalgia,” he said.

Merz added that while the US remains a key partner, the relationship is no longer automatic, as Washington increasingly links cooperation to specific interests and issues.
Previously, Merz had stated that the option of conscripting women into the Bundeswehr cannot be ruled out in the long term, citing the continuing threat posed by Russia.
Earlier, German Chancellor and French President Emmanuel Macron have also expressed support for the introduction of secondary sanctions targeting companies in third countries that help Russia sustain its war against Ukraine.
