Moscow’s Air Defenses Intercept Drone Attack Causing Temporary Airport Disruptions

Russian air defenses intercepted a drone attack targeting Moscow on May 21, according to the city’s mayor Sergei Sobyanin and state media. The incident caused temporary disruptions to air traffic at major airports.
By 5 p.m. local time, Sobyanin reported that seven drones had been intercepted as they approached the capital. Emergency services were deployed to manage debris falling from the intercepted drones.
Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsiya, announced temporary flight restrictions at Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports. At Sheremetyevo, Moscow’s busiest international airport, restrictions were reinstated for the second time, according to Russian media.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not provided further information. No casualties or damage have been reported.
Previously on May 18, Russia conducted a record drone strike on Ukraine, launching 273 drones from five directions, including Russia’s Bryansk, Kursk, and Oryol regions, as well as from the areas of Millerovo and Primorsko-Akhtarsk.
