NATO has issued an official statement marking the anniversary of Russia’s military aggression against Georgia, affirming its support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The organization has called on Russia to withdraw its troops from South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which NATO maintains are parts of Georgia despite years of occupation.
NATO spokesperson Fara Dakhalla stated on the platform X (Twitter) that South Ossetia and Abkhazia are integral parts of Georgia. She urged Russia to withdraw its forces, which have been stationed in these regions without Georgia’s consent. NATO reiterated its full support for Georgia’s territorial integrity.
We call on Russia to withdraw the forces it has stationed in #Georgia without its consent. South Ossetia & Abkhazia are part of Georgia, despite 16 years of Russian occupation. #NATO fully supports Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Russian troops entered Georgian territory on August 7, 2008, leading to Georgia losing control over Abkhazia and South Ossetia. On August 26, 2008, Russia recognized the independence of these regions.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also released a statement on the anniversary of the Russian-Georgian war, highlighting the persistence of Kremlin’s imperialist policies in the South Caucasus, Central Asia, and Europe.
European Union Foreign Affairs Chief Josep Borrell condemned the ongoing occupation and called for a peaceful resolution to the unresolved conflict.
