An American B-52H Stratofortress carried out a training mission over eastern Finland that included simulated strike runs near the Russian border, according to the Finnish Air Force.

The mission later continued into Estonian airspace, where the aircraft flew as close as 50 kilometers from Russian territory.

The flight was part of a multinational exercise involving Finland, Estonia, and other NATO members. The B-52H operated over the Sotinpuro training area near Finland’s eastern frontier, escorted by Finnish F/A-18 Hornet fighters.

Upon entering Estonian airspace, the bomber was joined by Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons. NATO also deployed an E-3A Sentry airborne early-warning and control aircraft in support of the operation.

According to the Finnish Air Force, the US bomber conducted a series of strike-simulation maneuvers designed to enhance readiness and interoperability among allied forces. US Air Forces in Europe stated that the deployment forms part of a broader set of exercises along NATO’s eastern flank and in the High North.

Earlier, Germany received its first P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, marking the start of Berlin’s transition from the P-3 Orion to a modern anti-submarine fleet. The aircraft arrived in Berlin on November 7 and will operate from Nordholz to monitor Russian submarine activity across the North Atlantic and the High North.
