NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has expressed confidence in US President Donald Trump’s ability to negotiate a long-term peace agreement in Ukraine.

According to CNN on March 18, Rutte stated that he has “full trust” in Trump regarding efforts to reach a settlement. His remarks come ahead of a scheduled conversation between the US President and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Rutte also noted the significance of the recent agreement between Ukrainian and US representatives in Saudi Arabia, where a ceasefire proposal was discussed. He described this development as “notable.”

Addressing concerns about Trump’s approach to negotiations with Russia, Rutte stated that he does not believe the US President places excessive trust in Putin.

“He knows Putin very well from his first term. Therefore, he understands what steps need to be taken to secure an agreement. I fully believe in that,” Rutte said.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced plans to speak with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on March 18 to discuss the war in Ukraine, the status of occupied territories, and the future of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump stated that efforts were underway to negotiate a potential resolution, mentioning ongoing talks between Ukraine and Russia on territorial and energy-related issues. His remarks follow a visit by his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who recently met with Putin to discuss a proposed 30-day ceasefire.
