New Russian Italmas Attack Drone Spotted on the Frontlines. What We Know So Far

Russian forces have reportedly begun using their latest attack drone, Italmas (also referred to as Izdelie-54 (Object 54)), in combat operations. Images confirming its presence on the battlefield have surfaced online, drawing attention from military analysts.
According to reports from Defense Express, the Italmas drone was first unveiled in September 2023 by the same manufacturer responsible for the Lancet drone.
It was designed to offer improved operational capabilities, with a range of approximately 200 kilometers and a warhead weighing several dozen kilograms. Russian sources have claimed that the drone integrates artificial intelligence-based guidance systems.

The initial testing phase for Italmas reportedly began in early 2023. However, Russian sources suggested that the drone was deployed as early as October of the same year, though no verified evidence was presented at the time.

The design and launch method of Italmas resemble those of Iranian Shahed drones, which have been widely used by Russian forces. The introduction of this UAV suggests an ongoing effort to enhance the country’s long-range strike capabilities.
Earlier, Russia’s Kalashnikov Concern unveiled the KUB-2 attack drone, developed with the Izhevsk Unmanned Systems Research and Production Association. Designed to replace the less effective KUB model, the KUB-2 features a 10 kg warhead and improved targeting capabilities. Although officially announced on January 21, evidence suggests it was already used in combat, with Ukrainian forces intercepting one on January 7.
