No Plans to Bring Ukraine Funding to a Vote in Congress, Says US Speaker of the House Johnson
Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has announced that Congress will not move forward with additional aid for Ukraine at this time, according to Voice of America on December 4.
“This is no longer Joe Biden’s decision to make,” Johnson said. “We now have a newly elected president, and we will wait to adopt the new commander-in-chief’s strategy on this matter.”
Johnson emphasized that no immediate funding measures are expected to come before Congress:
“I do not anticipate any funding for Ukraine being brought forward at this time,” Johnson said.
He also noted that Donald Trump’s leadership is already “changing the dynamics of Russia’s war against Ukraine.”
“We can already see this happening,” he added.
Previously, US President Joe Biden requested Congress to approve an additional $24 billion in aid for Ukraine to bolster Kyiv’s defenses and replenish US military stockpiles before his term ends.
