North Korea showcased a new intercontinental ballistic missile, the Hwasong-20, during a large-scale military parade in Pyongyang attended by senior delegations from China, Russia, and Vietnam, Reuters reported on October 10.

The parade marked the 80th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea and took place late Friday night, continuing a series of commemorative events held in the capital since Thursday.

According to Reuters, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presented the new Hwasong-20 missile, which state media described as the country’s “most powerful strategic nuclear weapon system.”

The missile reportedly uses solid fuel and is capable of carrying multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRV). Pyongyang claims the system can reach targets across the continental United States with an estimated range of up to 15,000 kilometers.

However, international experts remain skeptical about North Korea’s ability to ensure the missile’s warheads can survive reentry and accurately strike their intended targets.

High-ranking guests included Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Russian delegation head and former president Dmitry Medvedev, and Vietnamese Communist Party chief To Lam.

During the event, Kim addressed the armed forces, saying the “heroism of the DPRK army will be seen not only at home but also at the forefront of socialist construction,” a remark interpreted as a hint toward possible foreign deployments.

Prior to the parade, Kim held bilateral talks with Medvedev. According to Reuters, Medvedev thanked North Korea for what he called the “sacrifice of North Korean soldiers in the battles near Kursk,” describing it as evidence of “deep trust” between Moscow and Pyongyang.

Kim reportedly expressed readiness to “deepen cooperation” and expand “strategic exchanges” with Russia.

Earlier, North Korea conducted live-fire tests of two new surface-to-air missile systems designed to intercept drones and US-made F-35 fighter jets. The trials, reportedly supported by Russian technology transfers—including Pantsir-S1 systems—highlight Pyongyang’s growing focus on integrated air defense and reflect deepening military ties with Moscow.
