North Korean Soldiers Join Russian UAV and Artillery Units in Strikes on Ukraine

The Russian armed forces have deployed North Korean units to support operations in Nortern Ukrainian Sumy region, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported on October 16.

Operating from Kursk Oblast, these units conduct UAV reconnaissance, identify Ukrainian positions, and assist in adjusting fire from Russian multiple launch rocket systems.

Ukrainian forces have intercepted communications between North Korean drone operators and Russian personnel.

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Moscow continues to involve North Korean troops due to critical manpower losses and the failure of its offensive in Sumy.

Ukraine is documenting all confirmed instances of foreign forces participating in Russian invasion of Ukraine and stated that all such forces will be neutralized in accordance with international law.

Previously, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whittaker said that the involvement of North Korean military personnel in Russia’s war against Ukraine is unlikely to significantly alter the situation on the battlefield.

“The more North Korea gets involved in the war, the more it underscores the challenges Russia faces in Ukraine,” Whittaker said.
