US Ambassador to NATO: North Korean Troops Only Highlight Russia’s Struggles

US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whittaker said that the involvement of North Korean military personnel in Russia’s war against Ukraine is unlikely to significantly alter the situation on the battlefield, to Radio Svoboda reported on October 10.
“The more North Korea gets involved in the war, the more it underscores the challenges Russia faces in Ukraine,” Whittaker said.
He noted that when North Korean troops were first deployed, they were reportedly unprepared for combat and suffered substantial losses.

Currently, Russia does not appear to face manpower shortages that would necessitate further reliance on North Korean forces, the ambassador added.
“They do offer their soldiers higher pay, including recruitment bonuses and death benefits. Any additional reinforcements, including from North Korea, may strengthen Russia’s capabilities, but it is not a decisive factor,” Whittaker noted.
Earlier, it was reported that North Korea now supplies between 35% and 50% of Russia’s ammunition needs, providing up to a quarter million artillery shells every month.
