Orbán Says Ukraine’s Fall Would Be a “Catastrophe,” While Echoing Kremlin Peace Rhetoric

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said he does not want Ukraine to collapse, warning that such an outcome would be a “catastrophe” for Hungary, as he spoke at a so-called anti-war rally in the southern Hungarian city of Szeged on December 21.

“Make no mistake: Ukraine’s collapse would be a disaster for Hungary. Stability next door matters,” Orbán told his supporters.

He argued that Hungary plays a critical role in sustaining Ukraine, making unfounded claims that 44% of Ukraine’s electricity and 58% of its gas supplies come from Hungary, including gas that Hungary itself imports from Russia.

“We import Russian gas and supply part of it to Ukrainians. The world is a bit more complex than it looks from Brussels,” Orbán said. These claims could not be confirmed.

Orbán repeated his long-standing position that the war is steadily weakening Ukraine and that peace is “the only thing that can strengthen it. And those who truly stand with Ukraine must want peace,” he said.

Earlier, Viktor Orbán went to Moscow for talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin focused on securing Hungary’s crude oil and natural gas supplies, as well as discussing possible avenues for peace in Ukraine.
